Swing/AWT not supported by Eclipse on Mac OS X

Postby Eric Clayberg » Tue Jun 15, 2004 7:54 am

It looks like we have our answer from the Eclipse folks...

"Interoperability between Swing/AWT and SWT isn't supported on Mac OS X"
For the full exchange, see...

For more detail, see...

Apparently, we aren't the only ones who reported this problem.

Based on this, I don't think we will be support Swing Designer on the Mac any time soon. Sorry...

Just an FYI :

Finally, this might be resolved shortly and hopefully swingbuilder will work on the Mac :)

Yes, we know...we are the ones who originally opened this bug. ;-)

Yes...hopefully, it will be resolved soon. It will require using Eclipse 3.2 and a patch from Apple.

What do you mean by "crash"? At the moment, Swing support in Designer is hard coded to be disabled under the Mac, so I wouldn't expect it to work. It shouldn't crash though.

On our end, we need to confirm that the problem is truly fixed. Once we do that, we will need to enable Swing support in the product. Designer will need to check that the correct version of Eclipse 3.2 is being used (the fix will not work with earlier versions of Eclipse) and that the Apple patch is present.

I guess I was a little enthusiastic about it ;) ...

When I bring up the latest windowsbuilder on OSX Intel, and try the swing portion of the designer, it looks like it opens up, pallette is empty and then it exits with a JVM Terminate with Exit Code=10

Whatever it takes by way of patches will be worth it. I will be able to use your fine product again.

No. We're still waiting for a real fix from Eclipse.org and Apple. See this recent EclipseZone thread for more information. :-(

The latest v5.0.0 version of Swing Designer includes a Designer > Swing > Allow Swing development on OS X preference (default = off) that you can turn on under OS X, if you want to try the current Eclipse.org and Apple patch yourself. In our testing, Eclipse still locks up, but your mileage may vary. ;-)

Wow!

Apple just released a new Developer's Preview update to Java 5. According to the release notes, it fixes some crashes with SWT/AWT.

Lo and behold, I've got it running as I type this. I only performed a few basic tests, such as creating a swing app and drawing various controls such as buttons, checkboxes, etc... so far.. no crashes!

We have tested the latest Swing Designer build using Eclipse 3.3M5 and Apple's JDK 1.5 Release 5 Developer Preview 2 and confirmed that it works.

Make sure to turn on the Designer > Swing > Allow Swing development on OS X preference, if you would like to try this.
