Portland, Ore. — December 19, 2008 — Eclipse software experts Eric Clayberg and Dan Rubel today announced the availability of the third edition of their book, Eclipse Plug-ins, published by Addison-Wesley Professional. Building on two internationally best-selling previous editions titled Eclipse: Building Commercial Quality Plug-ins, the book has been fully revised to reflect the powerful new capabilities of Eclipse 3.4 and Java 5. The new edition covers using Mylyn and the new PDE and SWT tools available in Eclipse 3.4, as well as the Eclipse Command Framework, and offers a new chapter on the Graphical Editing Framework (GEF). Since the book's first publication in 2004, Clayberg and Rubel have expanded on their qualifications as leading Eclipse tools development experts.

This book is designed to meet the needs of several audiences: experienced Java developers wishing to build products that integrate with Eclipse and other Eclipse-based products (such as the Rational Software Development Platform, JBuilder or any other platform that supports Eclipse plug-ins); relatively advanced Eclipse users wishing to customize their environments; or anyone who is curious about what makes Eclipse tick. Readers do not need to be an expert Eclipse user to make use of this book.

All code examples, relevant API listings, diagrams, and screen captures have been thoroughly updated to reflect both the Eclipse 3.4 API and the latest Java syntax. In addition, Clayberg and Rubel have completely revamped their popular Favorites View case study, reworking much of its content and recreating its code from scratch. The authors carefully cover new functionality added to existing Eclipse features, such as views and editors, and fully explain brand-new features such as Commands, GEF, and PDE Build.

This extensively revised edition:

    o Thoroughly covers new preferences in Eclipse;
    o Illuminates the powerful new Eclipse Command Framework, which replaces the older Eclipse Action Framework;
    o Presents extensive new discussions of using commands with views and editors;
    o Introduces Mylyn, the new task-focused interface that reduces information overload and simplifies multi-tasking;
    o Contains an all-new chapter on using the Graphical Editing Framework (GEF) to build dynamic, interactive graphical user interface elements;
    o Provides a step-by-step walkthrough of the entire PDE Build process;
    o Shows how to create update sites with p2, which replaces the Eclipse Update Manager.
"Having used Eclipse since 1999, we are able to go into great detail on every aspect of plug-in development, with specific, proven solutions for the challenges developers are most likely to encounter," said Eric Clayberg, co-author of Eclipse Plug-ins, Third Edition and co-founder of Instantiations. "With the knowledge we've gained over the years, we have included all the extra steps needed to achieve the highest quality results that are necessary for a commercial offering."
