2009 CEO update on VA Smalltalk

Postby Eric Clayberg » Wed Dec 16, 2009 5:45 am

I'm very happy to bring you a bit of good news in what, for many people and companies, has been a tough year. In the midst of "choppy" economic waters, VA Smalltalk™ (VAST) had a very good year in 2009. VAST's robust year-over-year growth continues and the user community has increased significantly.

Instantiations' commitment to moving the technology and use of Smalltalk forward remains very strong. We understand that VAST is important to your business, as it is to ours.

In 2009 we continued our steady investment in VAST, releasing version 8.0 in April and version 8.0.1 in November. Our Smalltalk team remains dedicated to both supporting and enhancing the product.

Highlights of v8.0/8.0.1 include new, high performance Seaside web deployment functionality, tabbed browsers, improved documentation, and enhanced support for industry-standard communications features like web services to communicate with .NET and other non-Smalltalk-based systems. VAST libraries have been updated to work with current industry technologies (such as Vista® and Windows® 7), as well as the latest versions of popular mission-critical databases like Oracle 11 and DB2 9.

VAST Summit 2009, held in April, was a great success with well over 100 attendees from all over the world. If you missed it, all the sessions were recorded and are available on our website at http://www3.instantiations.com/e/404/en ... /164086126. As I write we are actively planning our Smalltalk events for 2010. We are considering a European event and possibly another online Summit. Plus we will actively participate in industry conferences.

VA Smalltalk provides high ROI and our goals continue to be providing the innovation, product support, and consulting services you need to protect and continue profiting from your important Smalltalk investments.

I'd be happy to hear your comments, suggestons or concerns about VAST. Many of you have taken the opportunity to tell us where you'd like to see us take VAST technically, and we highly value your guidance. Frankly, your comments are one of the most important sources of input that we use to make development plans for next year.

Thanks for your confidence in Instantiations and VA Smalltalk; we look forward to continuing our partnership with you and your organization for many years.

Best Regards and Happy Holidays,

Mike Taylor
