B128 Ubuntu 9.04 x86 install issue

Postby mariano_abel_coca » Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:54 am

Hi,

I'm having an issue when installing the client on Ubuntu 9.04 x86.

On the Feature Selection screen it says that the space available is only 1Mb (I have 20Gb available), and it also doesn't let me to change the installation directory, and it tries to install it on /usr/local/VASmalltalk/8.0. For the record, I don't have an older VASmalltalk version installed on this machine, and I'm trying to install the 8.0.1 version.

Edit: Same behavior when installing the manager.

Thank you in advance.

Mariano.

Hello Mariano,

VA Smalltalk must be installed using the path /usr/local/VASmalltalk/8.0, however this path can be a symbolic link.

Is there 20G of disk space available on the partition where /usr resides?

16Gb actually, not 20.

My disk has the followig partitions:

/dev/sda1: Size: 4.88 Gb, used: 3.86, free: 1.02 (ntfs, windows system recovery).
/dev/sda2: Size: 19.53 Gb, used: 7.90 Gb, free: 11.64 Gb (ntfs, windows).
/dev/sda3: Size: 19.07 Gb, used: 3.05 Gb, free: 16.03 Gb (reiserfs, linux /).
/dev/sda4: Size: 105.56, extended.
/dev/sda5: Size: 1.91 Gb, linux swap.
/dev/sda6: Size: 103.65 Gb, used: 81.81 Gb, free: 21.85 Gb (reiserfs, linux home).

The installation files are located on dev/sda6, on my Ubuntu Desktop, and the instalation is trying to write the files on /dev/sda3, which has the root directory and therefore /usr/local.

Last time I looked, VAST only supported extx file systems.

I've tried it on a virtualBox with an Ubuntu installed on an ext3 filesystem with same results.

The vm disk structure is:

/dev/sda1: size: 5.62 Gb, used: 2.41 Gb, free: 3.21 Gb (ext3, linux /)
/dev/sda2: size: 313.77Mb, extended
/dev/sda5: size: 313.74Mb, linux-swap

Exactly what error message are you getting?

On the Feature Selection screen it says that the space available is only 1Mb. Then the "next" button is disabled and I can't continue with the installation.

I don't think we've seen this exact situation before. There should be a file in your /tmp directory named act_c.txt which logs information about the installation. Could you send that to me at diane@instantiations.com?

Thanks.

Diane, could you comment on the file system situation? I know that emsrv doesn't care for file systems that aren't ext-based; is that true for the rest of the installation?

We have a SUSE 10 virtual machine using reiserfs on which we have installed VA Smalltalk 7 and 8 successfully. It works in standalone mode.

Emsrv will not run on the reiser file system. The workaround is to create an ext2 or 3 partition and launch emsrv from that partition. It must also log to that partition.

I'm running such a configuration: emsrv is running/started from a small ext3 file system partition (actually only for VA) and my manager directory is located (via links) to a raid-partition with a (I think) XFS file system (with an optimized handling for large files like e.g. TV recordings)

As Diane told me via email, the problem was in the LANG global variable. I've been able to install it setting it to: en_US.UTF-8.

Thanks!

Mariano.

Mariano,

I'm glad you successfully installed. I have a fix in the works to solve the problem installing with the locale set to other languages. I'll post here as soon as a development build is uploaded that contains the fix.

In the meantime, installing with the locale set to English serves as a workaround.
