Strong Hash Algorithm

Does anyone have code for a SHA-1 or similar hashing algorithm?

Hello,

There is an encryption algorithm at:

http://www.instantiations.com/VAST/more/goodies.html

. . . called XTEA but it is not an NSA level encryption algorithm as is SHA-1.

Also see the AbtMD5AlgorithmApp for an implementation of the MD5 message digest.

Hi John,

You should take a look at what the guys working on the encription code for Squeak have done.

Lou -

Thanks for the reference.

I think if we do anything more with message digests and encryption, the approach will be to wrap the OpenSSL code, but refactoring it down to something like an ENVY\Image Security map that isn't dependent on the rest of the OpenSSL stuff.

Thoughts?

Hi John,

I'm not very familiar with encryption and the OpenSSL stuff, I just remembered reading something about it in the Squeak news group. That said, wrapping OpenSSL sounds good. Sometimes the Squeak people (who I respect a lot and who are very active promoting and advancing Smalltalk) reinvent the wheel just to have everything coded in Smalltalk. Sometimes this is good, sometimes it takes more time than it is worth.
