6.0.1 Smalltalk app not working on Windows Server 2003

Postby kevinfoo7 » Thu Feb 08, 2007 11:15 am

We currently have several 6.0.1 applications running on Windows Server 2000. When we try to run them on Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise edition the application starts and exits without displaying our sign on dialog screen and does not produce any errors to the event log or smalltalk logs. Any idea on what is causing this and how to fix would be very helpfull. I tried running the application in 2000 compatibility mode but nothing seems to help?

You have probably run into the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature of Windows 2003 Server. You will need to either disable DEP for the Smalltalk executable (nodialog.exe or whatever you might have renamed it to) using the Windows Control Panel or move up to a newer Smalltalk virtual machine (VisualAge Smalltalk V6.0.3 or later or VA Smalltalk V7.0 or later) that includes support for DEP.

Thank You very much. Turning off DEP for the nodialog.exe solved the problem and everything works perfectly now. I turned DEP off under Control Panel/System/Advanced/Performance - Settings/Data Execution Prevention
