Windows Service unable to launch 7.5 image (abtntsrv.exe)

My application packages and runs fine in VA 7.00 as an Windows Service. I was able to re-package for 7.5 and execute the icx with all the old 6.02 exe, dll, cat or mpr files.

I then updated the abtntsrv.exe, all the dll, cat and mprs to the 7.5 versions and now the service will fail right away. Have the redistributed files changed? Am I missing one? I tried looking at http://old.instantiations.com/VAST/RedistributableRuntimeFiles70.htm but this is for 7.0. There should be a new list for 7.5 since the abtprc75.dll changed its name.

I will keep on trying until I hear back.

OK I have been doing this for 8 years and must be having a brain freeze.

With the newly packaged 7.5 image and all the executables (abtntsrv), dlls, cat and mpr files at 7.5 it will launch from the command line. But it will not even try to start from Windows Services. But the minute I put back the 6.02 executable it will start from Windows Services.

I need the weekend to clear my head and try fresh on Monday. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What do you mean by "...will not even try to start from Windows Services."? Do you get an error popup? Is there anything written to the Windows Event Log?

To follow up with our phone conversation.

I am receiving 'Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion'.

Since the Windows service could not launch the image I tried it by hand and it worked.

The abtntsrv.exe file has grown since VA 7.01 from 57,344 to 81,920 bytes. Not sure if that was to just make them LARGEADDRESS aware.

The abtntsrv.exe from the 7.5 and 7.01 install would not launch from the Windows service.
The abtntsrv.exe from the 7.0 install would launch, but it reports as being 'VisualAge Smalltalk Enterprise, Version 6.0.0 - 12/12/2001 VM Timestamp: 4.0,(NC) 8/26/2005' and needs the abtpay60.dll and abtprc60.dll instead of the 70 dlls.

Glad to see you were able to duplicate it. Good luck with finding the solution.

Converted to case 26125 and a fixed abtntsrv.exe was sent to Chris.

I am experiencing the same problem.

Could you please send me the fixed abtntsrv.exe, too?

(Or better yet, put it up for download on the VAST website. I am sure others will be interested in the fix, too.)
