Problem starting a package as a windows service

Postby tstalzer » Mon Jan 01, 2007 10:53 am

Hi

I tried to package an application as a windows service. The service worked under VA/St 6.0.2 and we wanted to migrate it to VA/ST 7.0.1

After the start of the service, we get an error message (7000) saying:

"Der Dienst antwortete nicht rechtzeitig auf die Start- oder Steuerungsanforderung. "

in english:
"The service does not respond to the start or control request"

If I use the abtntsir.exe and abtntsrv.exe from the 6.0.2 version the service works fine with the packaged 7.0.1 image (However, I cannot image that that is a recommended procedure ;-) ).

I noticed that the 7.0.1 version of abtntsrv.exe is an exact copy of the abtntsir.exe of 6.0.2. (except for the timestamp at offset 80hex)
;-)

Thomas -

You said you are getting error 7000. Is this in the Windows Event Log? What version of Windows are you running?

Are you running with debugging turned on (-srvDebug=logfilename)? Can you post the debug log?

I assume it was a typin mistake when you said "I noticed that the 7.0.1 version of abtntsrv.exe is an exact copy of the abtntsir.exe of 6.0.2. (except for the timestamp at offset 80hex)". Please confirm this.

Hi John

I assume it was a typin mistake when you said "I noticed that the 7.0.1 version of abtntsrv.exe is an exact copy of the abtntsir.exe of 6.0.2. (except for the timestamp at offset 80hex)". Please confirm this.

No, it was not a typing mistake. The file sizes are as follows.

VA/ST 7.0.1
abtntsir.exe - Size 45056 Bytes
abtntsrv.exe - Size 57344 Bytes

VA/ST 6.0.3
abtntsir.exe - Size 57344 Bytes
abtntsrv.exe - Size 73728 Bytes

If I do a byte-wise compare of the abtntsrv.exe of 7.0.1 and abtntsir.exe of 6.0.3, only 8 bytes at offset 80h are different. It appears to be some kind of timestamp.

I'll try and create the log. I will post it later

Thomas -

This is quite odd

I just looked at the va603_cw.zip file and found:
abtntsir.exe - Size 40960, timestamp 5/23/2005
abtntsrv.exe - Size 57344, timestamp 5/23/2005

and in the va701_cw.zip:
abtntsir.exe - Size 45056, timestamp 10/24/2006
abtntsrv.exe - Size 57344, timestamp 10/24/2006

Can you post the timestamps of the executables you have from 6.0.3 and 7.0.1?

Thomas -

I never heard back from you on this problem. However, we got another report of a similar problem with more detailed information and a fix has been created FOR (not IN) VA Smalltalk 7.5. Let me know if want it.
