Will Instantiations provide support for applications developed in VA Smalltalk 7.0 and deployed on 64 bit hardware?

Yes. We plan to add support for 64-bit Windows platforms in v8.0.

Linux and perhaps support for the "oldest" 64 bit operating system: Solaris ?

As far as I know, most of the 64-bit operating systems will run 32-bit code written for the same OS. This is definitely the case for Solaris.

Creating a dedicated 64-bit VM for a platform will entirely depend upon customer demand for a true 64-bit VM for that platform.

So far, only Windows has sufficient demand to warrant creating a true 64-bit VM. That may very well change, but I don't want to make any promises.

Native 64 bit vm support

Postby Garv » Tue Jun 19, 2007 12:43 pm

Is there an estimated target date / quarter / year for a native 64 bit windows vm?

Our enterprise clients are moving towards high end Itanium machines which only support native 64 bit applications. This is in line with the roadmaps for hardware vendors as they push these class of machines into the corporate space. As is common these days, corporates outsource their IT to companies such as IBM which reduces vendor flexibility on hardware platform choices.

Our software solution encompasses automation (headless) images as well as SST web service deployments integrated with .NET technology. These are the components we have targeted to move onto an Itanium based platform. Since it takes time for us and our partners at Intel / HP / Dell / Microsoft to budget for performance labs and resources, it would be great if you could provide a high level date so we can be proactive in our preparation of these engagements.

Thanks!

No.

At this time, we have no plans to support Itanium. Our Windows (and Linux) vms are only targetted only at x86.
