GWT Designer on Eclipse/JVM 64-bit: Unsupported Architecture

Hi,

I got the following message when trying to open the Design view of any GWT Designer composite:

Unsupported Architecture.
64-bit Windows is not supported for this version of GWT. Please use 32-bit Eclipse and a 32-bit Java VM.

I am aware that a while back GWT Designer required 32-bit Eclipse and JVM on Windows (old system requirement page says: Use under Windows requires 32-bit Eclipse and a 32-bit JVM)
But the new system requirement page doesn't specify such requirement anymore (http://code.google.com/webtoolkit/tools ... ystem.html).
I tried the same setup on Centos 5 x64 and it works fine, but I prefer developing on Windows.

Could I get a status clarification on this (on Windows)?

That is weird as that version of GWT Designer fully supports 64-bit Windows using that version of GWT.

Have you tried it with a new, clean Eclipse install and new workspace?

I found the problem: Previously I put the Eclipse install folder in \Program Files\. After I moved the Eclipse install to My Documents, the problem goes away.

Eclipse must have tried to write to the install folder when switching to the Design view and it failed because of insufficient admin privileges. Another solution (I guess) is to just "run as administrator".

Edit:
The 32-bit Eclipse/JVM install actually works fine even if Eclipse is installed into \Program Files\. The error message together with that fact led me to believe it was a 64-bit architecture problem.

Edit 2:
"Run as administrator" doesn't solve the problem if Eclipse is in \Program Files\. For anyone else encountering the same problem, just avoid placing Eclipse install in \Program Files\.

Hi !

I have the same problem, gwt work fine in 32bit eclipse / 32bit JVM but with 64bit Eclipse/ 64 bit JVM i have :

I tried to move my eclipse folder to My Documents and the problem not goes away for me.

I tried with http://dl.google.com/eclipse/inst/d2gwt/beta/3.6 and http://dl.google.com/eclipse/inst/d2gwt/latest/3.6

It's a bug ? or it's my configuration ?

I'm open for any sugestions

I have the exact same problem. When I followed the above advice and moved eclipse from a folder on my desktop to MyDocuments it broke my GWT and GWT designer and I had to re-install them.

Now everything works, but when I switch to design view, I get the unsupported error. I'm using the exact same setup as the others listed above.

Hi NegaScout,

GWT references to its SDK locations with absolute paths. So when you move the Eclipse folder around, you also have to reconfigure the preferences (Window > Preferences > Google > Web Toolkit), same thing with other components like App Engine SDK.
Just so that Eric can focus on GWT Designer issues and not Windows issues, do you login to Windows with superuser (admin) account?
If yes, does the Eclipse install folder allow full access? (right-click > Properties > Security (tab), click your user account in Group or user names, see if "Full control" is allowed under Permissions).

I am logged in as an administrator, and have tried running eclipse as administrator. I checked the preferences, and full control is checked (on the folder and the eclipse.exe file itself). Since this is a 64-bit system, I don't have the option to run it in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode, but I've tried running it in Windows Vista Compatibility mode with no luck.

This is super frustrating. I've tried everything and I simply cannot get design view to open.

Thanks for looking into this. I didn't know about the Preferences, but reinstalling changed them to the right place (I checked and the directories are correct now).

Thanks for checking. I honestly don't know what's different between my setup and yours. There's 1 other confirmed case where moving the Eclipse install out of \Program Files\ solved this problem (http://code.google.com/p/google-web-too ... il?id=6118).
Other than that, all I can say is good luck.

I tried to put the full control to the install folder.

Without success

In preferences this is GWT who is checked with a location in the install directory of my eclipse 64 bit (in the folder plugins).

Someone have an another idea ?
