[solved] GWT Plugin update site - is this alive?

Postby peterblazejewicz » Wed Feb 20, 2008 4:52 pm

Hi Eric and Team!

after reading N&N for 4.0 (from link in pinned post):
http://download.instantiations.com/Desi ... 0.html#GWT
I"ve found that:
http://update.instantiations.com/WBPro/E-3.3/
(Eclipse update site),

it looks like all features/plugins are there,
So can we start using update site?

regards,
Peter

Yes. We have been testing it with Genuitec's Pulse service for a couple of months, and it seems to work.

Note that the above update site only shows updates for major releases. Our continuous build update site that tracks every new build is here...

http://download.instantiations.com/WBPr ... ate/E-3.3/

Note that the continuous build update site will show new updates every day (and often more than once a day).

thanks Eric,
that's really good, I've found using separate downloads a little hard, I created linked installation (both on Windows/OSX) to speed up things, running update process via Eclipse will ease that process,

hi guys,

it works really well, I've migrated Designer 4 from linked installation to installation via update site without issue,

thanks for that change (side note: docs could be updated to reflect that addition),

All the features and plugin now include qualifiers to make the update site possible.

hi Eric,

I'm pretty confident right now that:
#1
updates page works if used with:
Help>Software updates>Find and install>Search for new features for install
(where GWTD update site is already added and checked0
#2
updates page does not work if used with:
Help>Software updates>Manage Configuration .. Find "Windows Builder Pro" branch > "Scan for updates" task

is that correct?
When #1 is used new update is installed and after restart old version of product is listed in Configuration so it can be deleted if required or restored,

regards,
Peter

If you have load the product via the update site (as opposed to the installer), I can't image why it would make any difference which way you scanned for updates.

hi Eric,
so I cannot update via configuration window features. I've installed WBP (GWTD) using update site and "find and install" options,
maybe someone will be able to recreate that so we could submit that as issue,

It looks like the update manager uses the primary update site URL referenced in the WBPro feature. It doesn't actually use the update site URL that you used to install the product.

The primary update site URL is http://update.instantiations.com/WBPro/E-3.3/, but that update site only triggers on major updates (the most recent of which was ~5 weeks ago).

Unfortunately, this behavior appears to be built into Eclipse, and it appears to be working as intended.

You can still use the Find and Install > Search for new features to install option to grab the latest updates from the continuous build update site.

hi Eric,
thanks for clarification, I'm doing exactly as you described in your last mail and I think that fits my habits well (I've automatic updates feature disabled in Eclipse configuration anyways),

I was actually surprised by its behavior when I went to research this. I had expected it to use the URL I entered into the update manager rather than the one in the product.

The way it works now would seem to preclude have multiple, parallel, automatic update sites with different update frequencies.

I'm using a Pulse-based installation. GWT Designer is still not getting updated by Pulse, although the Find and Install > Search for new features to install approach works fine. Any plans to allow integration with Pulse? Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean.

The entire WindowBuilder product (including GWT Designer) has been Pulse-enabled for months. We have lots of customers accessing the product that way.

Have you asked Genuitec about this?

Perhaps I installed my licensed copy of GWT Designer incorrectly. So, I started up Pulse on Windows XP via Start - Programs - Pulse - Pulse (Launcher). It gave me the option of starting one of the standard profiles (Eclipse Europa for Java, Eclipse Europa for Java EE or MyEclipse Enterprise Workbench). Instead, I Browse Categories, and under Java Development I see WindowBuilder Pro. When I select that and click Next, I get the following error:

An error occurred while attempting to communciate with the Pulse server. Please verify you have network connectivity and try again. If problems persist, the server may be temporarily offline. Contact support for further assistance.
Software [feature.com.instantiations.wbpro.feature] version [6.5.0] is unavailable; required by [profile._wbpro_]

I appreciate your continued assistance.

Sounds like you have a really old version of Pulse.

v6.5.0 of WindowBuilder hasn't been available via Pulse for about seven months now. The current version is v6.7.1.

If you are having problems with Pulse, you need to contact Genuitec. That is not something we can help you with.
