Designer disappeared from Eclipse

Postby wolverinesport » Fri Feb 08, 2008 6:41 am

This has happened twice now. I installed GWT Designer in Eclipse. Used it for a time--starting and stopping Eclipse multiple times over a couple weeks. Then one day, I open Eclipse and every trace of Designer is gone from a UI perspective. It's not in the Eclipse Preferences. It's missing from the New Project type list. Yet, the plugins and features are still there in the Eclipse directories. I tried recopying them in. Still no show.

I wish I could say what I did differently the last time I used Eclipse, but I don't know what that could have been to cause this. Any ideas?

The last time this happened, I assumed it was that the trial expired, so I purchased a 1yr subscription about a week ago, and registered it and all that.

Here's my environment info:
MacBook Pro (Leopard)
Eclipse Version: 3.3.2, Build id: M20080123-0800
GWTDesigner_v3.0.1 (the one for Eclipse 3.3 only)

If I pull up About Eclipse and click on Plugin Details, nothing from Instantiations shows up in the list. Same with if I click on Configuration Details.

Anything in your Eclipse ".log" file?

Have you tried restarting Eclipse with the -clean option?

Have you reviewed the suggestions in the Designer FAQ?

Thanks Eric for the response and the links. While trying some of the suggestions, I ended up messing up my Eclipse instance--went overboard with the cleaning of the configuration dir. So I set up (unzipped) a fresh Eclipse 3.3.2, copied in the GWT Designer features and plugins, and started it up. It worked fine. I restarted Eclipse, still fine. Then I installed the M2 Eclipse plugin for use with maven2 and restarted Eclipse. Found the culprit. I could have sworn I had restarted Eclipse multiple times since installing that before and used Designer OK, which is why I didn't think that plugin was the problem.

The actual culprit was the version of the M2 Eclipse plugin I was using. When using the dev version (http://m2eclipse.codehaus.org/update-dev/), something prevents Designer from coming up OK. However, the stable version of M2 Eclipse (http://m2eclipse.codehaus.org/update/) works fine along side of Designer.

Again, thanks for your help.

Thanks for the update. We have never heard of that problem. It is actually unusual for one plugin to interfere with another like that unless it is causing a global problem of some sort.

Did you log show any interesting exceptions?
