I have successfully installed GWT Designer several times on Ubuntu Linux with Eclipse 3.3.0. On one particular machine, the installer would not recognize Eclipse (automatically or manually using the "Choose Eclipse" button).
Thanks to another topic, I learned about the -debug option for the installer (-debug -out installer.log --verbose)
This led me to learn that my eclipse directory did not contain a .eclipseproduct file. Creating this file allowed me to proceed with the installation.

All valid Eclipse installations should have a .eclipseproduct file in the root Eclipse directory.
If that file is missing, the installer won't identify that directory as being significant.
