Designer was unable to find any GUI elements in your source.

GWT Designer allows you to quickly create the modules, composites, panels, remote services and other elements that comprise Google Web Tookit applications.

Designer was unable to find any GUI elements in your source.

Postby AethelJack » Thu Sep 20, 2007 6:07 pm

Been trying to get Designer working, and am at an impasse. Opening the Demo project and clicking on "Design" produces a dialog with this title and text:

-------------------------------------------------
No GUI roots detected

Designer was unable to find any GUI elements in your source.
Check that the open compilation unit is a GUI class.
-------------------------------------------------

... and an exception with a trace that I've pasted at the bottom.

The little demo app works fine when I run it, popping up a web page with a clickable button and all, so it seems like GWT is working fine with Eclipse.

But there is no working Designer. I see the basic organization of Designer's elements, but the Palette, Property Editor, etc., are all empty and the work space is titled "Unknown Window Type".

Eclipse isn't hung, I can go back and edit the source, save my changes, and run it again.

I'm using Ubuntu amd64, Eclipse 3.3 (amd 64) running in sun-java-6 (64 bit). The project runs in ia32-sun-java-1.5.

What does Designer need that it can't find, and how do I point it there?

Cheers,

Jack

Unfortunately, GWT does not support 64-bit linux.

See http://code.google.com/p/google-web-too ... ail?id=135 for details.

Currently, we are in the process of investigating a way around this limitation. You might try running Eclipse (with Designer) using 32-bit Java.

I did read that thread, and a few others. Specifying a 32-bit JVM for the project seems to keep GWT happy.

I installed VMWare, and WinXP Pro in that, and now have Eclipse, GWT, and GWTDesigner running virtually. It's probably not a long-term solution but at least now I can evaluate the tool.

My first impressions are very positive. I'd be interested to keep up with whatever progress is made trying to find a solution, and am willing to test and give feedback.

Cheers,

Since GWT is also being run within Eclipse, it is also important to run Eclipse with a 32-bit VM as well.

Once GWT provides native 64-bit Linux support, we will also be able to support that configuration as well. The only issue at this point is in GWT itself.
