Web.xml clobbering

How do I created includes or whatever to insert custom values into the autogenerated web.xml? I'd like to set the welcome file list and session timeout etc.

I've been editing the build.xml file's 'web-xml' target and just using the deploy target afterwards, but of course changes to the class path are not reflected until i regen the web.xml file. Is there a way to have my stuff included short of pasting it in after it's generated?
