Beginner needs tutorial

I've installed all the goodies. I can run Eclipse, create a project, now I am totally lost. Is there a tutorial to take me step-by-step thru my first application? The current documentation seems suited to someone with a lot more knowledge than I have.

A quick overview of what you can do with GWT Designer is available here.

If you are looking for a general introduction to GWT itself, see the GWT documentation on the Google site.

Ed Burnette's GWT book is also a good introduction to GWT.

I have looked at the stuff in "quick overview of what you can do with GWT Designer is available here." I find it hard to follow; seems too sparse for a newbie.

I am into the "GWT documentation on the Google site." It too is sparse for my needs. I can get part way thru the RPC studd, but too much is not explained for me to get it going. One example is ServiceDefTarget. No clue as to where this comes from or do I have to create it?

Have you tried Ed Burnette's GWT book? It's a very good intro to GWT.

Yes I got the book. Very helpful in some areas. Did not address the server side of JSON-RPC.

I could use a reference manual.

Have you tried posting any questions to the GWT Forum? That would seem to be the ideal place to get such questions answered.

According to the Google GWT site, two of the GWT creators are writing a book on GWT that is due in 2007.

I am investigating the Python version of GWT (Pyjamas http://pyjamas.pyworks.org/). I think this will meet my needs better than GWT, as it allow me to program in Python instead of Java, saving me a lot of time and debugging effort.

I'd love to see what it might take to create a Python Instatiations version. Any interest?

If your curiosity is stimulated I refer you to http://pyjamas.pyworks.org/examples/ where you can see the GWT examples running under Pyjamas. I'm impressed!

We're focused entirely on Java, so working on a Python based tool (a language that none of us use) is very unlikely.

Available tooling support (e.g., Eclipse) is much better for Java than it is for Python, so I am not even sure that this is a good idea for us.
