Error when launching Eclipse

Postby sgerogia » Fri Nov 17, 2006 1:00 am

Hello all,

I am trying to evaluate the GWT designer.
After a fresh installation over Eclipse 3.2.1, when I launch the IDE, GWT is not available (e.g. in Window-Preferences).
In product configuration the GWT Designer Feature is marked with an X. The rest of the GWT features/plugins seem OK.

I see the following errors in the the error log console
- (2 times) Problems occurred when invoking code from plug-in: "org.eclipse.ui.workbench".
java.lang.NullPointerException

Any ideas why this is happening?
Have I ommitted anything?

I would appreciate any help/ideas/hints.

Thank you for your time.

Cheers,
S.

My configuration (installed in that order):
- Win XP Pro SP2
- Freshly unzipped Eclipse SDK v3.2.1 under c:\dbin\eclipse-3.2.1
- Registered MyEclipse Entr. Workbench v.5.1.0 GA under c:\dbin\MyEclipse_5.1.0
- GWT Designer v.1.0.1 installed under c:dbin\GWT_Designer_1.0.1

I see that you have at least one problem with MyEclipse - your first NullPointerException's. May be second exception also caused by same reason.

I've developed/used GWT Designer long time under Eclipse 3.2.0 and never saw such exceptions. Recently I've switched to 3.3M3 also without problem. Can you try GWT Designer using fresh 3.2.1, without any additional plugins, especially such big as MyEclipse?

BTW, I don't understand you fully. Does GWT Designer works or not?

No, GWT does not work (i.e. no menu items, no "Create GWT project" etc)

OK, thank you for the suggestion.

I will try an re-install everything, w/o MyEclipse this time and I will keep you posted.

BTW, are there known/reported incompatibility issues that the GWT designer has with other plugins (such as MyEclipse)?
I could not find anything relevant in the GWT designer docs.

I don't know any specific incompatibilities of GWT Designer with other plugins, but I remember that I saw several times that MyEclipse causes problems for other plugins, even that come from Eclipse itself (may be BIRT).

Hello again,

Just to follow up on my problem

Installing GWT Designer after MyEclipse 5.1.0 is problematic.

What I did was:
- Uninstalled MyEclipse
- Installed GWT Designer
- Used GWT Designer for a while (not sure if this is needed or not)
- Re-installed MyEclipse (license is not lost, fortunately)

After that, both GWTD and MyE seem to be living happily together.

OK, I have not used each and every feature of both, but at least there are no start-up exceptions

I hope this helps someone.
Thank you for your help.

How did you install GWT Designer originally? Using the installer or ZIP file?

Your original symptom (GWT Designer not present at all), would indicate that either GWT Designer was not installed properly or not linked into Eclipse properly.

Did you try restarting with -clean or manually cleaning your Eclipse /configuration directory (delete everything except the config.ini file)?
