Javadoc and source attachments in Eclipse (Helios)

Postby Ben K » Tue Jan 04, 2011 11:14 am

Hi,
I've been getting started with Window Builder Pro in Eclipse 3.6 (Helios), and as far as I can tell so far, it's a very interesting product.

But! (You just knew there was a but, didn't you?) I cannot for the life of me, figure out how to get source attachments and javadoc on the SWT classes in eclipse.
None of the SWT content in my eclipse directory seems to contain either source or javadoc. The Eclipse.org javadoc pages are wrapped in a horrible web-browser only interface from which I can't extract 'real' URI's for the API folders. And I've no idea if there are source jars or javadoc zip/jars elsewhere on the web - for once my googling skills have let me down.

Do you have plans for making these resources available?

I'm a web developer by profession, and as I use maven for dependency management and eclipse project control, I'm used to having javadoc and source very easily at hand ... therefore, it's extremely frustrating trying to learn to code SWT apps against the Eclipse binary code-view instead of proper javadoc or source.

Thanks for your time. As I say, as far as I can see, Window Builder Pro should be well worth the effort of learning!

We don't plan to make those resources available as they don't belong to us.

They are available from Eclipse.org and are built in to various Eclipse distributions (like the Eclipse Classic/SDK distro). With Eclipse Classic, this should be pretty much automatic.

For instructions on how to hook this up in Helios, you really should go to Eclipse newsgroups for assistance.

I walked away for a couple of hours, had dinner, and came back less frustrated... now I've found what I should have been looking for in the first place. (basically it's here: http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/dow ... EclipseSDK)

Thanks for your time.

Yes. Eclipse Classic (also known as the Eclipse SDK) should include all of the source while many of the other distos do not (for those, you need to go get it separately).
