Apple to Discontinue JVM Support

Postby tinnitus007 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 4:03 pm

So now that I am just getting started with RCP, I find this news to be particularly deflating: http://www.macrumors.com/2010/10/22/steve-jobs-comments-on-apples-java-discontinuation/

Apple will no longer supply a JVM, starting with the next version of OS X. My understanding that Apple has always recoded their own JVM, and there are no others available. That does not necessarily prevent others from stepping up to fill the void, but... Will there be enough incentive ($) for Oracle or anybody else to develop and support a desktop JVM for Mac OS X? Will Apple dissuade or prevent this?

Will somebody step up with a JVM? What's the good word? :(

While this questions isn't exactly on topic for this forum, I would say that I'm not particularly concerned with this issue. If there is an incentive (financial or otherwise) for someone to step up to do this, it will happen.

At Instantiations, less than 3% of our SWT Designer users used OSX for building SWT/RCP apps.
