Installation problems

Postby SteveBolton » Wed Jan 14, 2009 5:40 am

I have recently moved to a new Windows User Id on my development machine. WinXP SP3, 3GB RAM, Dual Core t60p.

Following this windowbuilder pro was unlicenced. I attempted to install my permanent licence but this failed.
As I had evaluated other instantiations products I decided to uninstall them all and just re-install WB Pro.

After a re-install the designer node in the windows preferences does not show up.
Tried downloading and installing 6.8 and latest stable developer builds - no improvement. Still can't see the product let alone licence it.

Tried uninstall - re-boot - reinstall - no change.

Tried a completely new Eclipse 3.4 download with a new workspace. Same problem.
Note that each time the installers complete without errors and I am using the option to clean out the config directory in the installer.
I have wasted about 3 hours on this and I need to be developing today.

Next up I have tried to install under an Eclipse 3.3.1.1 instance. Using the Choose eclipse button in the installer (re-running installer without first uninstalling), I navigate to the eclipse subfolder within the Eclipse 3.3.1.1 instance and press ok. The dialog returns to the Select Product page with the 3.1.1 instance not added to the dialog.

I am running IBM Java 6 - this has been running WindowBuilder Pro without problems for months.

Please can you help?

Well it seems that running the Eclipse update process has now caused the designer window to appear in the preferences. .. ....

And we get

Thank you for using WindowBuilder Professional.

Your WindowBuilder Professional support period has expired.
You may continue to use earlier versions of WindowBuilder Professional
that were released during your support period.

So now I have to go through the same frustrating process again....

So I uninstall the 6.9 version and install the 6.7 version - as usual it doesn't appear even though I check the option that should make it work

So into Eclipse to run the update from there and I can see the designer there. GWT 6.9 is still lingering about for some reason but I can see a GWT Designer 6.7 - I pick that to update in the hope that it will fix the problem so that I can attempt to activate it, but of course I can't do that because it wants to take me up to 6.9 again....

According to our records, your support expired last year, so you would be limited to instaling and activating the v6.8.0 release until you renew your support. You also need to use the e-mail activation option as web activation is only available to currrenly supported licenses. See...

http://download.instantiations.com/Desi ... activation

http://download.instantiations.com/Desi ... ml#expired

You didn't mention what version of Eclipse you wee using in your original installation attemp, but assuming it was 3.4, you are likely running into a common Eclipse 3.4 p2 bug. To workaround that, you need to restore the original eclipse\configuration and p2 directories from the Eclipse zip file and start Eclipse with the -clean flag. If that does not help, unfortunately, you'll need to start with a fresh copy of Eclipse and re-install Designer.

I'm not sure what you mean by "navigate to the eclipse subfolder within the Eclipse 3.3.1.1 instance" since Eclipse doesn't typically have an "eclipse" subfolder.

I am also unsure what you mean by "attempted to install my permanent licence but this failed" in your first post (unless you mean that the web activation failed as described above). You should be able to install v6.8.0 and activate the license using the e-mail option.

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to negotiate support budget at the moment.

Sorry, I organise eclipse instances by names like Eclipse 3.4 and within there is the normal eclipse folder... The installer refused to use the eclipse folder within my Eclipse 3.3.1.1 folder, or rather did not add it to the list of installable eclipse instances.

When I received the original licence the email contained two numbers - WindowBuilderPro-nnnnnnnn and another 10 digit number. I was hoping that I would be able to use these numbers to activate the product.

Unfortunately I have started reinstalling 6.7 - thanks for letting me know that I qualify for 6.8. - I'll try your suggestion for fixing the p2 bug.
Thanks and best wishes

That is unusual.

There is typically a serial number an dan activation key. Activation keys are machine specific and tied to the local Mac address. The license info is stored in your user home directory in a file called Instantiations.license. If your user name changed, that would trigger a new activation (although simply copying the license file to the new user home directory should also work).

Ok, thank you very much for the support and the quick turnaround for the licence request.

Steve.
