Eclipse 3.4M6 Warning [Fixed in M7]

Postby Eric Clayberg » Tue Apr 01, 2008 11:05 am

The new p2 provisioning system in Eclipse 3.4M6 has a serious bug that will freeze Eclipse on startup and prevent Designer from working.

See Bugzilla Bug 225171. Please avoid 3.4M6 until this is resolved.

I've just fired up the latest 3.4M7 with the SWT Designer download from http://downloads.instantiations.com/Designer/continuous/latest/Designer_v6.6.0_for_Eclipse3.4.zip, and Eclipse is starting now, but SWT Designer is nowhere to be found in Eclipse. If I browse to the list of included plug-ins, SWT Designer is not listed there as it was in 3.4M5. Any ideas?

How did you use the ZIP file to install the product? What exact steps did you follow?

In general, you should use the full installer to install the product. That is the only mechanism we have tested with M7.

I'm running on OS X, and as far as I'm aware, there isn't an installer.

So, I unzip the ZIP, and then copy the contents of the plugins and features folders to the respective folders in the Eclipse distribution. This has worked in the past (e.g. for 3.4 M4).

Eclipse 3.4M6 introduced an entirely new provisioning system, so that approach may not work any more.

New plugins need to be added to the /dropins folder (details are available on the Eclipse.org web site).

Ah yes. That's got it. There needs to be an 'eclipse' folder inside the 'dropins' folder. This is where the features and plugins folders from the SWT Designer go. Got to love bleeding edge!

Apparently, you can also install it elsewhere and use a .link file to reference it.
