I am unable to open TestNG *.java files without crashing eclipse 3.6 in gdiplus.dll+0xf75b.
Unfortunately *.java has been locked to 'Code Pro Test Editor' which I guess has no support for TestNG tests.
As a workaround I would like to unmap 'Code Pro Test Editor' as the default *.java because of this, but don't know how?
Suggestions appreciated.

If you open the Preferences dialog to the General > Editors > File Associations page, you can select "*.java" in the list of file types. That will populate the list of associated editors. If you then select "Java Editor" and click on the "Default" button, that will restore the default Java editor as the default editor for .java files.

Thanks Brian, it worked around the issue.
I also tried patching the MSFT GDI+ DLL using WindowsXP-KB972483-x86-ENU.exe,
then updated my intel G41 graphics card drivers using
http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm.
After the latter, the crash finally disappeared, so happy days as the problem also affected opening mylyn JIRA tasks.
