VAST 5.5.2 under VMWare problem

Postby PhotonDemon » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:35 pm

Hi All,

I'm sorry for posting a problem with an old version of VAST but hopefully someone will have had a similar problem and be able to help me.

I'm trying to run one of my VAST 5.5.2 programs (actually more than one) on
VMWare version 3.5.0 build 64607, running Windows server 2003 R2 SP2. The
programs stops almost immediately with the same message and same fault address
of: 0x00050060.

The failing message is:

"Faulting application MyProgram.Exe, version 5.5.2.0, faulting module
MyProgram.Exe, version 5.5.2.0, fault address 0x00050060".

There are no walkbacks and no VM dump.

Any help/ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Lou -

VMWare 3.5.2? Wow, I don't think I've ever seen that old a release!

I suspect you are running into a Data Execution Prevention (DEP) problem. Because VisualAge Smalltalk does dynamic compilation of bytecodes, it is supposed to execute code in areas of memory that Windows considers to be data. There is a way to turn DEP off for individual executables -- on Windows XP it is done from the Properties of MyComputer (well-hidden behind the Performance Settings button on the Advanced tab) -- there should be something similar for Windows 2003 Server.
