I know Designer has some options on event coding generation ... is there any documentation out there discussing:
a) The best-practices methods of clearing widgets from one state to move to another state (including events/handlers)
b) If any of the event coding options should lead to different means of handling this transition.
THANKS!

The Google GWT website and forum would be the best places to look for anything related to GWT Best Practices.

Yep. This forum is specifically for GWT Designer issues.
For expert help with GWT itself, the Google GWT forum is excellent.
