SWT Embedded browser question

Postby peterblazejewicz » Fri Oct 12, 2007 9:14 am

Hi GWT Designer team,

this is general question I saw asked in few other places related to Eclipse/Windows development:
do you think that is there any possibility to use WebKit windows binaries as embedded browser (something you are using in Design view I believe) in Eclipse on Windows?
There are increasing market for such solution I think, the first you probably already know: iPhone you guess, the second is adobe air development,
If you are interested I could write small summary for both here,

regards,
Peter

In general, that should be possible, but it is not something we are doing in Windows ourselves.

Currently, we only use WebKit for rendering GWT under OSX.

What do you recommend that we do?

hi Eric,
at least for Windows/OSX there are WebKit builds,
Considering that one of main feature of GWT Designer is "Design" view which allows us to do WYSIWYG development it can be worth to have design which reflects target platform (which is increasing in my opinion due to WebKit growing implementations),
I don't think that is something which need to be done, because we can always use OSX machine for devleopment where WebKit is used both in GWT Designer view and in GWT toolkit hosted mode (I have both PC and OSX machines),
However knowing that most developers are still on PC/Windows machines you can make some research if that will be something that can make some incomes for company or not,
On GWT group popular question is how to switch browser used in hosted mode - to be honest: most of them are about using FireFox on Windows,
On Aptana forum (iPhone plugin) there were the same because people use windwos machines mostly and they suffers from not seeing exact rendering in IDE embedded browser,

Again that topic is something for consideration, if you gain some GWT team interest in that porting (WebKit binaries used as option in Windows GWT Hosted mode) then probably you can join teams efforts for that,

regards,
Peter

What specifically are you recommending that we do?

Are you suggesting that we port our WebKit support to Windows?

What woud the benefit be to doing that given that IE is the default and always present ona Windows box.
