After opening designer, I can't drag a layout on the screen.
changes color, makes cursor look to be ok but won't accept drop,

just downloaded today and
eclipse 3.0.0. build id:200307181617

Which version of the Designer did you install? The Eclipse 2.1.1 or 3.0 version? Are there any exceptions recorded in the Eclipse .log file?

200307181617? From July? SWT Designer supports Eclipse 3.0 M3 or M4. We don't support any older Eclipse 3.0 releases or any of the nightly or integration builds (it may or may not work...no guarantees on those).

just to get back to you that the version mismatch was indeed the problem.
I downloaded V3 M4 and it worked.
